Playing around with awarding badges on sites

I’ve been looking at the Mozilla Open Badges initiative lately, as a way to improve engagement with a particular site or Blog. My idea is that you could assign a set of earnable badges to a particular page of a site, perhaps different ones on different pages, and present the opportunity to earn one by answering a few questions – using the Open badges infrastructure to store the badges earned.

It’s still in the early stages, but here’s a picture of how it would work, with all configuration data coming from Google Apps ScriptDB,

I’m planning to use the same code, whether it’s a web page, a blog, a google site, even a desk top application. Anything that can embed an iframe could host it. I have it pretty much working except for the storing and retrieving badges from the openbadges backpack. This post is a little premature but I wanted to test the widget on a blog, so what better way than to post something.

To see how you would earn a badge, click on one of the badges on the below right, and take the associated quiz.

The panel on the right is just an iframe with this embedded link.

The panelset id is all that’s needed to defined the  set of badges to show, along with their associated questions. Click on a badge to take a quiz.

For more information on how all this works, and to see this embedded in Google Sites see Excel Liberation. Look out for a future post when I’ve figured out how to wrangle the open badges issuer and displayer API and browserid authentication.

I am a Google Developer Expert and decided to investigate Google Apps Script in my spare time. The more I investigated the more content I created so this site is extremely rich. Now, in 2019, a lot of things have disappeared or don’t work anymore due to Google having retired some stuff. I am however leaving things as is and where I came across some deprecated stuff, I have indicated it. I decided to write a book about it and to also create videos to teach developers who want to learn Google Apps Script. If you find the material contained in this site useful, you can support me by buying my books and or videos.
