I’ve been looking at the Mozilla Open Badges initiative lately, as a way to improve engagement with a particular site or Blog. My idea is that you could assign a set of earnable badges to a particular page of a site, perhaps different ones on different pages, and present the opportunity to earn one by answering a few questions – using the Open badges infrastructure to store the badges earned.
It’s still in the early stages, but here’s a picture of how it would work, with all configuration data coming from Google Apps ScriptDB,
I’m planning to use the same code, whether it’s a web page, a blog, a google site, even a desk top application. Anything that can embed an iframe could host it. I have it pretty much working except for the storing and retrieving badges from the openbadges backpack. This post is a little premature but I wanted to test the widget on a blog, so what better way than to post something.
To see how you would earn a badge, click on one of the badges on the below right, and take the associated quiz.
The panel on the right is just an iframe with this embedded link.
https://storage.googleapis.com/toasty/s/badgemanager.html?panelset=xliberation The panelset id is all that’s needed to defined the set of badges to show, along with their associated questions. Click on a badge to take a quiz. For more information on how all this works, and to see this embedded in Google Sites see Excel Liberation. Look out for a future post when I’ve figured out how to wrangle the open badges issuer and displayer API and browserid authentication. |
